AS LONG AS THE HEART BEATS

Company: National Theatre Wales

Co-directors: Ben Tinniswood + Marcus Romer

Design + Creative Workshop Leader: Becky Davies

National Theatre Wales spent over a year asking the people of Wales to share their stories and memories of the NHS.  The show was inspired by these stories, and weaved them into an immersive and engaging theatrical production that took place in the Outpatient Department of the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport, featuring specially-composed music and interactive elements.

WORKSHOPS

In addition to designing the labyrinth of performance installations (see illustrations above), Becky gathered handwritten thank you cards to the NHS from project participants and day-to-day visitors.  She also led creative workshops with Outpatient Department staff and patients, celebrating Wales' advancements in Ophthalmology through documenting stories of eye care services through drawing.  Sound Designer Tic Ashfield collected heartbeats to weave into the show's soundscape.  All participant and public contributions were showcased in the final show design, and the fragrant garden installation was donated to the staff to continue to enjoy in their courtyard break space.
